HOW TO HELP WITH READING AT HOME

Supporting your child and their learning can have a major impact on how they do in school.  It is always good to show that you care.  I understand that we are all very busy but here are a few ways you could help your child with reading at home whenever you have the chance.  Also another big thank you for helping your child with reading homework when it is sent home!

01

READ, READ, READ

A very simple way to help your child improve their reading ability is to read to them or with them.  You can pick books that you have at home, read library books, or even read the letter people books or other books that are sent home.  Through listen to books the student's ability to recognize letter sounds and understanding how to read with expression is greatly enhanced.

Practice Letters

Practice letters with the students is also another way to help them.  This can be done by using flashcards or even just asking them to name letters in different type of print (books, newspapers, signs, etc.).  It is also helpful to point out capital and lowercase letters.  When you are asking the students to recognize letters, another question that could be asked is if they know the sound or sounds that go along with the letter.  Sometimes it is hard for them to understand that every letter has a name and a sound.

03

Practicing Names

The students have been working hard on writing their names.  By the end of kindergarten we would like the students to be able to write their first name 100% correct.  This means that only the first letter is capitalized and none of the letters are backwards.  It doesn't hurt to have your child continue to practice writing their name at home.  You could even work on their last name or other family members names.  Not only does name writing work on their handwriting skills, it also is another way to help them work on letter recognition.

04

Work on Phonemic Awareness

Phonemic Awareness is "the ability to notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds in words."  This involves skills like rhyming, syllables, beginning sounds, and soundig out words.  You can find many ideas on how to work on these skills online or by looking at the document below.

Sight Words

There are many different ways to practice sight words with students including playing games and even just pointing them out while reading.  Sight words are words that are very common and found in almost any book.  Some examples of these words would be the, a, like, he, she, and the list can go on.  Once we start learning sight words in our class you will be able ot find the list on this website under Reading and then click on Word Wall.
