At CR-B and in my classroom, our ultimate goal is to prepare the students for their future.  We want them to grow up to be respectful, caring, and educated adults.  We strive to make them the best people they can be.  One way I do this is by promoting growth mindset in our classroom.

There are two kinds on mindsets a person can have.  The first being fixed mindset and the second being growth mindset.  A fixed mindset is when "people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits.  They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them.  They also believe that talent alone creates sucess--without effort."  This allows the individual to make very little growth because they are not able to encourage themselves on.  If an individual has a growth mindset, it is almost an oposite reaction to the way they think of different situations.  "In a growth mindset, people believet that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are jus thte starting poing.  This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment."  What it comes down to is people with a growth mindset are able to tell themselves to continue to try and problem solve when things do not go according to plan.

The main way that students will learn growth mindset in our classroom is by using the word "yet".  When they come into kindergarten they may say a statement like "I can't read", but the kind of statement we will teach them to say is "I can't read yet".  With a lot of hard work, anything can be accomplished.  Another way students will work on growth mindset is by making mistakes and learning from their mistakes.  They will learn that it is okay to ask for help and continue to strive to get better at whatever they are working on.  "Life is about making mistakes and learning from them."

Talk With Your Child

Parents play a big roll in teaching their children by talking with them and modeling how to persevere through difficult tasks.  One way you can do this is by asking them questions to help develope their growth mindset.  Below are just some of the questions that can be used.

Be A Role Model

This is pretty straight foward.  Children learn so much from just watching.  When they see you continuing to work hard and not giving up, that teaches them they can do it as well.  You being encouraging not only to them but to others is another way to model growth mindset.  Below are some positive statments that can be used.
