5 Star Writing

Writing is a big skill that is introduced in kindergarten. Ms. Meyer and I try our best to get the students ready for when they enter first grade and are expected to write short stories. Our goal is to get students writing sentences independently by the end of the school year. We start by writing letters and then move to sounding out and writing words. This will then lead to them writing sentences. When it is time for them to start writing sentences, we use a strategy called five star writing. It is a way for them to remember what is important while writing. They are reminded about the five stars before writing and then they also use the five stars when checking their writing after they have completed.
